I don't get it...

Help me out here...

How does the phrase 'meteoric rise' make any sense?

That meteor ain't rising out of the ocean there. It's crashing. Hard.

So if anything should be described as 'meteoric', might I suggest a failure?!?

EXAMPLES
blah blah...Obama's meteoric rise to become president...blah blah
--->MAKES NO SENSE
blah blah...the meteoric failure of Gigli...blah blah
--->Oh, I see. Because it was a terrible movie, and stuff...

That is all.

I've never thougt of that before. I went and check and some synonms for metoric are: blazing, brief, celestial, sudden swift, rapid...
So it's not actually a meteor it's acting as an adjective describing the type of rise.

My guess off the top of my head, when a meteor hits the ocean, the sea levels rise; like in Deep Impact.
